The Lalish Theaterlabor is an experimental research center for theater and performance culture, founded in 1998 in Vienna by artists Nigar Hasib and Shamal Amin, two artists with roots in Southern Kurdistan. Since 2000, the theater laboratory has been based at Gentzgasse 62 in Vienna and serves as a center for artistic exchange between cultures. Their work focuses on the fusion of voice, movement, and life, with the aim of dissolving the boundaries between art and everyday experience. Central to their research are concepts such as: The voice as a visual and physical aspect of action—”Voice for the eye, not just for the ear.” Singing as a source—where singing becomes an action that creates rhythm, image, and presence.
The Lalish Theaterlabor hosts performances, workshops, performative encounters, music and singing concerts, dance performances, intercultural dialogues and artistic collaborations, workshops and open lab sessions, and international tours.
He has received international recognition and in 2022 was awarded the Austrian Art Prize (Österreichischer Kunstpreis).
