Os Geraldos is a theater group composed of artists between the ages of 18 and 59, hailing from small towns in the countryside of São Paulo and other Brazilian states. They bring with them a perspective deeply rooted in the Brazilian hinterland. Since 2008, the group has developed a form of popular theater that values direct engagement with the audience and combines technical research with the lived experience of those who know the country from the inside.
The group’s aesthetic is developed through three key elements: the Visuality of Performance, supported by an in-house laboratory responsible for creating costumes, sets, and lighting; Vocal Expressivity, which explores the spoken and sung word as the central material of the stage; and the Chorus, understood both as the structural foundation of the performance and as a sign of the group’s collective work ethic. In this way, the relationship between aesthetics and ethics is manifest both on stage and throughout the creative process.
The group has toured 105 cities in 24 Brazilian states and 10 countries. In addition to national and international tours, Os Geraldos runs the Teatro de Arte e Ofício (TAO), a 41-year-old independent space that hosts their productions, training activities, and the strengthening of a collective and accessible theater scene.
